The biggest percentage of people in the US suffering with
health issues are disadvantage or low income. They are at a greater risk of
being unhealthy. Some reasons could be not being able to afford buying healthy
foods or not having the mental capability needed to make healthy food choices. Eating
healthy can reduce and minimize health problems. With having concerns of food
issues there are other necessities at greater risks. Illnesses, living
situations (housing, utilities and clothing) as well as transportations (fuel
and maintenance) are other concerns these individuals have to deal with. These
are issues and concerns encountered by being disadvantage or low income. When
any of these problems are not addressed it can cause other stressors which
cause health problems. When these needs are not met it can have a negative effect
on being healthy.
Lula,
ReplyDeleteI believe you are very on point about health issues causing stress that leads to more health issues. I watched the video "There's No Small Stuff" Being Poor in Louisville, KY and was saddened by the tragedy many face in poverty. I kept thinking it is a cycle that must be near impossible to break out of and as a viewer I felt very helpless.
Good luck this semester.
Dena
Hello Lula,
ReplyDeleteI also agree that stress and health go hand in hand. The stresses that come with living in poverty and the health issues that arise along with the lack of resources all combined have a negative outcome. Like Dena mentioned, sadly it's a vicious cycle.
Lula,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree that stress and health go hand in hand. I've always found it fascinating that public school systems focus on things like advanced algebra, yet negate to teach life skill basics like healthy food choices, balancing a checkbook, and reducing stress! My third grader is being taught a ridiculous method of common core math and has the stress of the STAR test passed onto her from her teacher. If those who are underpriveledged could be taught better methods of day-to-day life, they would fair better in the long run. "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day...teach a man to fish and he will eat forever."
Thanks for your insight!
