Blog #4

I remember watching the local news one evening and the topic was about Welfare and drug screenings in Texas. I didn’t know what to think or if I even cared. I felt as if it wasn’t my business because I didn’t receive government assistance of any kind. Looking back as I read responses from current postings I would have to say I now have an opinion on the subject. I think women on Welfare should be focused more on raising their children and seeking employment or education rather than smoking pot. Monies spent on pot should be spent on providing a better life for the children especially when mothers are receiving assistance. After all mothers only qualify to receive assistance if they have children. The only alternative to not passing the drug screen would be because of medical reasons and the mom having permission by her physician. I think it’s a great idea to have Welfare recipients screened.

  1. Lula,

I totally agree with you it is bad enough that like you said you have to have children to qualify to be on welfare. We all know some women who have no interest in getting a job, they feel like the government owes them something. I love the idea of them having to get drug screened, why shoudl they continue to live good lives because the government is helping them take care of children they made conscious decisions to have. We as working people have no interest in smoking pot, they should not either. They should focus on being role models for their children and leave any type of drugs alone. I say go government, make them accountable for something. Please don't make the children suffer because of their parents. Great post!

  2. Hi Lula,
I can relate to you with this topic, where I grew up there are housing projects near by that serve as welfare housing. When I go back there I always see a lot of people that I grew up with who are living there and are on drugs and do not work or go to school. Instead they continue to have more kids so that they can continue to draw assistance and do not fully care for their current children. I believe that the should screen people requesting welfare for drugs and also do home check ups because many times these children are not being properly cared for.
