The person that is most inspirational to me is Florence Nightingale. She was born in Florence Italy in 1820’s where marriages were arranged. She was supposed to marry when she decided to stand up to her parents and go to nursing school. It was at age 16 when she decided her passion was being a nurse. By age 17 she had pursued her dream and started school. She was remembered as a hero for lowering the death rate in hospitals. She did this by practicing hygiene and sanitation. She would also be recognized for assembling a group of nurses to aid with taking care of sick and dying soldiers during the war. I am inspired by her courage to follow her calling and passion. She was determined to do what she loved doing. She made it possible for all women with dreams of becoming a nurse possible. One of my goals upon completion of a bachelors program is to go back and finish an accelerated nursing program.

  1. What an amazing story! The fact that she chose to stand up to her parents was brave enough but to then go and be able to pursue her dreams is huge. She was obliviously a great nurse because she cared enough to pay attention to sanitation and lover the death rate. If going back to the nursing program is your dream, this is an amazing woman to admire while doing so.

  2. Someone else wrote about Margaret Sanger, another nurse who was an important advocate for women's rights. People who stand up against the grain to do something good for society are so inspirational to me. Not only do they have to face rejection, criticism, and lack of support from friends/family, but they may not have the resources of others to do what they really wish to do in life. Thank God for women like Nightingale who had the strength to lead the way. She made great contributions for medicine and for women.

  3. In Nightingale' s time, it was tradition to marry at a young age. However, her desire to help others in need triumphed over her parents wish for her to marry. As a steadfast nurse, she would cling to her principles of sanitation which would drastically improve death rates at the hospital. As a result, Nightingale serves as a picture of the ideal nurse, whose mission is to ensure the positive health of her patients.

  4. Hello Lula,

I know how the pressure Florence felt with the pressure of marriage opposed to education. Coming from a cultural background, at this age (21) my mom expects me to be married in a couple of years. But I tell her that this day in age, it's important for women to get their education so they can provide for themselves and won't have to rely on anyone. Possibly change the world!

    Thank you,
